Tyre label.

Information on tyre labelling

Tyre label.

The tyre label provides you with the most important information about your new tyre – from fuel efficiency to winter suitability. It’s where you’ll find everything you need to know to make the right choice.

The image shows an EU tyre label with the “ENERG” title and a lightning symbol. It contains two coloured scales from A (green) to E (red) for fuel efficiency (left) and wet grip (right); this tyre is rated C or D. Below you can see information about the external rolling noise category (“XY dB” and “ABC”), snow grip and ice grip (icons), as well as a number (“2020/740”). There is space at the top for the supplier’s name, tyre size and tyre identifier as well as a QR code.

Evaluation criteria

Since May 2021, the tyre label has provided you with important information about the economy, safety and usage profile of your tyre.1 The header of the label provides information about the exact designation of the tyre as well as the tyre size, load-capacity index and speed category.2 The symbols below inform you about fuel efficiency, wet grip, noise emissions and winter suitability.

The image shows two black symbols on a white background. On the left is a tyre shown in profile. To the right is a stylised gas station symbol with a drop and a lightning bolt, indicating petrol and electricity as fuel options.

Fuel efficiency

The lower the rolling resistance, the lower the fuel consumption. The classification ranges from A (most efficient) to E (least efficient) and is based on the determined rolling resistance3. And with the correct tyre pressure, you save even more fuel.

A black tyre is shown in profile with stylised water droplets splashing up beside it. A black cloud floats above the tyre with rain falling from it. The image symbolises the grip of a tyre in wet or rainy conditions.

Wet grip

A tyre’s grip on wet carriageways is an important safety aspect. Good values mean shorter braking distances. Wet grip4 is therefore tested and documented with classes A (best value) to E (worst value).
The following always applies: driving safety primarily depends on your own driving style. Please always take stopping distances into account for any possible braking manoeuvres and check tyre pressures regularly.

The image shows a black tyre in profile next to a stylised loudspeaker symbol emitting sound waves. The loudspeaker symbol features “XY dB” and the letters “ABC” are arranged below the loudspeaker. These indicate the tyre noise level in decibels and the external rolling noise class.

External rolling noise

How loud a passing vehicle is perceived by other road users also influences the rolling noise of the wheels. The label provides information regarding this by stating the measured value5.6 in decibels (dB) and the categories A (best value) to C (worst value).

A black triangle reminiscent of a mountain pictogram can be seen on a white background. Inside the triangle is a stylized mountain top with a serrated line and parallel, diagonal lines underneath that may represent layers of snow or rock. The entire symbol looks minimalistic and could represent mountain sports, outdoor activities or something similar.

Snow grip

Winter tyres are mandatory in wintry road conditions. They are marked with the snowflake symbol.7
But be warned: always adapt your speed and driving style to the road and weather conditions. Because regardless of your tyres, the potential danger increases on wintry roads – so always drive with particular care.

The image shows a stylised mountain symbol with a snowflake in the centre. The mountain is represented by a simple, black outline suggesting triangular peaks. The snowflake on the inside is also black, reinforcing the association with winter conditions or a cold climate. The symbol could be suitable for winter tyres, winter sports or cold weather in general.

Ice tyres

Special ice tyres are designed for icy roads and can be identified by the glacier symbol.8 They are designed for extreme winter conditions, such as road surfaces with a layer of ice or solid snow.
But be warned: always adapt your speed and driving style to the road and weather conditions. Because regardless of your tyres, the potential danger increases on wintry roads – so always drive with particular care.

Make sure that it is appropriate to use ice tyres because in less wintry conditions, such as in the wet or at warmer temperatures, ice tyres may be less effective in terms of wet grip, handling and wear.

1 Excluded are a) off-road professional tyres; b) tyres designed to be fitted only on vehicles registered for the first time before 1 October 1990; c) T-type temporary-use spare tyres; d) tyres whose speed rating is less than 80 km/h; e) tyres whose nominal rim diameter does not exceed 254 mm or is 635 mm or more; f) tyres fitted with additional devices to improve traction properties, such as studded tyres; g) tyres designed only to be fitted on vehicles intended exclusively for racing; h) second-hand tyres, unless such tyres are imported from outside the EU.

2 According to UNECE Regulation No. 30 or UNECE Regulation No. 54 for category C1, C2 or C3 tyres

3 Measured in accordance with Annex 6 of UNECE Regulation No. 117 and the laboratory alignment procedure set out in Annex V of EU Regulation 2020/740 on the labelling of tyres with regard to fuel efficiency and other parameters

4 The wet grip category is determined by the wet grip index (G), which is calculated in accordance with Annex I, Part B, No. 2 of EU Regulation 2020/740 and measured in accordance with Annex 5 of UNECE Regulation No. 117.

5 Determined in accordance with Annex 3 of UNECE Regulation No. 117

6 The external rolling noise category is determined on the basis of the limit values (LV) set out in Annex II, Part C of Regulation (EU) 2019/2144.

7 Snow grip performance is tested in accordance with Annex 7 of UNECE Regulation No. 117. If a tyre satisfies the minimum snow grip limit values set out in UNECE Regulation No. 117, it shall be classified as a tyre for use in severely snowy conditions and the “snowflake” icon is included on the tyre label.

8 The ice grip performance shall be tested in accordance with reliable, accurate and reproducible methods, including, where appropriate, international standards, which take into account the generally recognised state of the art.
